The Fiji Islands are made up of more than 300 islands with about 100 islands inhabited. The largest, Viti Levu, is home to Nadi, Suva and the Coral Coast. It is the gateway to the Mamanuca Island group and most visitors will arrive in Nadi and transfer to their mainland or island destination from there.

Accommodation

Accommodation is varied and ranges from backpacker dormitory style through to ultimate in luxury. There is something to suit all budgets. Most island and many mainland resorts offer a range of watersports and activities. Tour Managers can assist in selecting the best accommodation for your needs.

Population

The total population of Fiji is approximately 800,000. Approximately half are native Fijian and 46% of Indian origin with 4% made up of Chinese, European and other nationalities.

Local Customs

The Fijian people have over 3,000 years of history and culture. They welcome the participation of visitors in their culture and local customs including kava ceremonies, lovo feasts and meke performances. Adherence to local dress customs is requested and expected.

Business Hours

Generally business hours are from 8am-5pm Monday – Thursday, 8am-6pm on Friday and 8am-1pm on Saturday.

Shopping

Fiji has developed as a major duty free shopping centre. Bargaining is still conducted in some of the duty free shops but the larger stores have fixed prices. Fijian artifacts are available from roadside stalls to the larger shops. Fiji has a well developed, competitive clothing industry and there are good bargains for shoppers in all town centres. Local markets also offer good quality products for very reasonable prices.

Tipping

Tipping is not encouraged in Fiji, however many Resorts will accept a staff fund donation.
